The Portrait

We were asked to take a portrait of someone that we have never interacted with. These were shot off campus in my friends student accommodation of one of his flatmates.

This is the image I’m happiest with. I had the subject sit next to the window in their apartment kitchen, and I got low to the ground and looked up at the subject to show a dominant look. The light hitting the subject reflects nicely on the right side of his face and holds a nice shadow covering the left side of his face. The closed mouth and eyes looking away support the dominance look I was going for and really highlight the detail on the subject.

These are some other photos that I took the same approach on.

These aren’t as strong because of the composition. In the top left of the photo you can begin to see the ceiling and with the perpendicular line of the wall it makes the photo look poorly thought out.

These photographs I experimented with pose.

I like both of these pictures compositions and the way the model is positioned; however the light is poor. It covers too much of the subjects face in shadows and makes the overall look of the picture look too dark. I could’ve used a reflector to bounce back some more of the light from the window back onto the subject to make the picture come out lighter.

These final photos I experimented with close ups.

Again the lighting in these pictures are poor and a reflector would’ve helped bounce some of the light back onto the subject. Despite this I like the way these photos did turn out, the detail and sharpness of the subject make the images stand out, the emotionless face pulled by the model can make the audience put their own interpretation onto the photo and therefore make it mean something to them personally.
